CHECOTAH, Okla. — The Muscogee (Creek) Nation Lighthorse Tribal Police participated in the Shop with a Cop event Dec. 17-19 in McIntosh County.

Shop with a Cop is an annual event where multiple law enforcement agencies collaborate to take under privileged children shopping for Christmas.

The children were picked up from school and given a police escort to go shopping. Each participant was given $300 to spend. The majority, $220, was spent at a local Wal-Mart store and the remaining $80 was spent on clothing at Sharpe’s Department Store.

After a morning of shopping, the children were treated to lunch at a pizza restaurant.

The school districts chose the students to be in the program. This program was funded by donations from area businesses and by individual donations from both inside and outside McIntosh County.

This year, nearly 45 children participated in the program: 15 Eufaula Public School students, including some from MCN Eufaula Dormitory, 12 students from Hannah, Dustin and Ryal and 18 Checotah Public School students.

CHECOTAH, Okla. — The Muscogee (Creek) Nation Fountainhead Creek Golf Course held a ribbon cutting Oct. 1 to celebrate the new facility updates.

The updates include new golf carts, new greens and a new roof among other things. Principal Chief James Floyd said the state of the art golf carts have lithium batteries to last longer. The carts are more efficient and are equipped with GPS.

“It will be a lighter foot print on the golf course and so the golf course is a jewel here and one we want to protect,” Floyd said.

Fountainhead General Manager Jimmy Saenz started four months ago. He said the facility has a lot of plans including hole re-configurations and they are just getting started.

“We are looking to bring quality back to the golf course,” Saenz said. “I’ve gotten an opportunity to play the full 18 holes here, love it.”

Fountainhead has also moved to a tiered pricing structure to make the course affordable for everyone.

Saenz announced that in the spring, they would be opening a teaching academy for high school students.

Youth to financial education through interactive game

Eufaula, Okla. — Eufaula Middle School Students will be receiving a lesson like they’ve never seen before. Volunteers from the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, the Mvskoke Loan Fund, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma, and First Family Federal Credit Union will teach students an innovative way how to handle their finances.

It’s called the “Spending Frenzy” a youth financial literacy event, which teaches middle school aged youth how to handle money and make life decisions in an interactive game environment. Thirty-five students have been pre-selected to participate with 25 volunteers facilitating the game. Each participant will be given 50-thousand dollars to spend at different stations such as housing, car dealers and much more. At the end of the event, each student will tally up their finances to see how they fared.

Learning to budget money is an issue for many people, especially young people said Christopher Coburn, CEO of the Mvskoke Loan Fund. “Instilling good habits and financial literacy into youth may save them from financial mistakes and will position them for making good choices in the future,” said Coburn.

The Spending Frenzy will be held Tuesday, Sept. 12 from 12:30 to 3:30 pm at the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Eufaula Boarding School gymnasium 716 Swadley Drive, Eufaula, Okla.

If you’d like more information about the program, please contact the Mvskoke Loan Fund at 918-549-2608 or 918-549-2603.
